Longtime community member and arts advocate Bernie Kuehn has been selected as the Hillsboro 2020 Outstanding Individual for 2011. Bernie has been a tireless performer and promoter of the arts in Hillsboro, particularly the performing arts. He is Founding Artistic Director and Conductor of the Washington County Chorale, now called the Oregon Chorale, and musical director of many local theatre productions. He is a founding member of the board of directors of Hillsboro Community Arts and the Hillsboro Arts and Culture Council and has sponsored the Hillsboro Symphony, amongst many other community volunteer activities. Hillsboro Farmers’ Market has been selected as the Hillsboro 2020 Outstanding Organization for 2011. Under the leadership of Market Manager Laura Conroy, the Hillsboro Farmers’ Market (HFM) has expanded the markets beyond Downtown to Orenco, Tanasbourne and Tuality Hospital. The Farmers’ Market also contributes to other actions in the Vision by providing access to local goods, and providing neighborhood gathering places. But above all, the Hillsboro Farmers’ Market builds community. People gathering each week at the markets help create a sense of community and can recognize their neighborhoods as being as part of the Hillsboro community.
